General information on Judo
Judo (柔道, jūdō?, meaning "skilled way") is a modern martial art, self-defense system, combat sport and Olympic sport.
Judo is derived from Ju-Jutsu which was the military close-combat system of the Japanese knights (the samurai).
Most prominent feature of Judo is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw or takedown one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold or choke.
Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defences are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori).
Contest (試合, shiai?) is a vitally important aspect of Judo. Judo became an Olympic sport for men in the 1964 Games in Tokyo and is nowadays worldwide one of the most popular fighting sports with millions of practitioners. The worldwide spread of judo has led to the development of a number of offshoots such as the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which is nowadays dominating the international full-contact free fight competitions competitions (ultimate fighting without rules). That shows clearly the efficiency of Judo as a martial art and self-defense system.
The advantages of Judo especially for kids are:
-
Judo gives the opportunity to practise a full-contact combat sport which allows the use of all strengths in practising and fighting but with low risks of injuries.
-
Because of its full-contact nature Judo develops all physical abilities, fitness and strength of a kid much more than the common non-contact or semi-contact fighting sports (like most karate styles).
-
Judo is well known as an excellent tool to develop not only physical but also mental strength, self-confidence and self-dicipline.
-
Because Judo kids are used to fights under controlled conditions they tend to be calmer, more relaxed, less frustrated and less aggressive than other kids.
-
The focus in Judo on fighting (both in training and in competitions) mentally prepares a kid at an early stage to handle “the tough sides of life” with self-confidence and a healthy fighting spirit.
-
Judo is an important part of all modern self-defense systems and therefore an excellent base for specialized self-defense training (Ju-Jutsu) and for all other martial arts.
